When it comes to modern farming, aeroponics revolutionizes the way we row food. Growing aeroponically is a cutting-edge approach that transforms the way we think about agriculture.
In this entry, we dive into the basics of this innovative growing method, and discover the benefits of aeroponically grown food.
Aeroponics is a soilless method of growing. A combination of air and mist delivers nutrients, directly to the roots. The term aeroponics derives from the Greek words “aero” (air) and “ponos” (work), meaning “working with air”. Aeroponics delivers water and nutrients through mist or vapour, allowing them to grow in a completely soilless environment.
Typical aeroponic systems are set up in a way where the roots are suspended in air, and misted with a nutrient-rich solution. This system keeps the roots hydrated, and provides all the vital nutrients for growing a healthy plant. This modern gardening method is effective for growing many types of plants such as; leafy greens, herbs, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and so much more!
There are many different styles of aeroponic systems currently on the market. Most systems comprise of the basic following components:
Root Chamber: a vessel or enclosed area where the roots are suspended
Nutrient Solution: made up of water and nutrients such as; nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium.
Watering/ Misting System: comprises of a reservoir, pump, nozzles or hoses that deliver the water and nutrients to the roots.
Grow Lights: Artificial lights are required to simulate an outdoor environment. Light is required to complete photosynthesis.
Environmental Controls: Temperature, humidity and light regulation is crucial in order to optimize the growing conditions.

Aeroponics is quickly becoming the most efficient way to garden. No soil, no hassle. The plant roots are in direct exposure of frequent watering with concentrated nutrients. In comparison to traditional irrigation, misting the roots conserves a lot of water, as evaporation and runoff are nonexistent. Here are some ways that aeroponic gardening is efficient:
Less Land: Aeroponics uses 98% less land. Most modern systems are designed with small spaces in mind. With our grow towers, you can grow vertically. A grow tower uses about 15 square feet, whereas a traditional garden requires more land and space.
Year-Round Production: Growing indoors is easy with aeroponics and it allows you to grow food year-round. No matter the season, you can continuously have fresh herbs, leafy greens, and produce.
Less Water: Aeroponics uses 98% less water than traditional gardening. The water is recycled through the system until the roots consume it all. There is little to no evaporation or runoff.
Less Resources: Aeroponic systems require less nutrients, because the concentrated solution is delivered directly to the plant roots, and then recycled.
We are prisoners to pesticides, herbicides and toxins when we shop at the grocery store. Growing your own food aeroponically indoors is a great way to reduce the amount of pesticides and herbicides you consume. There is no need to wash aeroponically indoor grown food – this limits the amount of chlorine, rust, and calcium you consume from the tap. Aeroponic gardening does involve work, but it’s an investment I’m willing to make!
Although this modern method of gardening offers a ton of benefits, it also presents its challenges. The initial cost for an aeroponic set up can be higher than traditional soil gardening. The specialized equipment can add up in cost, and may require an upfront investment. Aeroponics also relies heavily on technology. Through the use of digital controls, and timers any technological malfunction can be detrimental to the plants.
Aeroponic gardening offers a sustainable and efficient way of growing. Aeroponically grown food’s flavour is superior to soil grown because of the precision in nutrient consumption. This removes issues with waterlogging and residual chemical taste. The innovative techniques of aeroponics offers many benefits, and as more research is done, the costs decrease. Aeroponics is the future of rowing food. Whether its commercial urban farms, or small urban gardens – Aeroponics is the way to grow.
